After ascending through the narrow Pigna carrugi (or alleyways), one reaches via Rivolte where the road widens
This area was created as a result of the demolition work following the earthquake of 1887. The embankment wall, built using masonry from the destroyed houses, may be observed uphill from this point. The lanes which climb towards via Rivolte are full of character. The most outstanding among these is vicolo Maimone with a house on via Rivolte, the masonry of which dates almost entirely from the 12th century, on which are curiously depicted building details typical of the following century, similar to the walls of San Siro church.
