Porta Bugiarda o Porta del Roglio

The Roglio Gate allows access to Pigna from the East or rather from the rio San Francesco valley. This is a very early entrance made up of a system of gates built between the 14th and 15th centuries.

Once inside, this area of the city is also particularly old, as may be seen from the very densely packed buildings, with numerous covered passageways. The Gate gets its name from the water flowing into the rio San Francesco or into the channels feeding the mills and oil mills.

For unknown reasons, the Gate has always been called the Bugiarda (Deceitful Gate), perhaps in relation to the series of misleading passages, or perhaps because upon entering into the city, one is faced with a cross-roads, uncertain of which direction to choose.
