Piazza Capitolo

Located in the heart of the Pigna district, almost at the beginning of its history. Without doubt, this is the origin of the city of Sanremo. Indeed, the first public building (N°12) where the Capitolo, i.e. the parliament of family heads, the city’s first embryonic administration, used to meet, faces onto the square.

The Genoese authority then transferred the Sanremo town council to the new municipal palace in piazza di San Sebastiano o dei Dolori. There are numerous buildings around piazza Capitolo dating from medieval times, with interesting masonry and gateways. In the centre of the square there is a fountain pertaining to the construction of the water system in 1828.
