Porta Palma

Along via Palma one encounters a narrow, covered passageway: this is the Palm gate.

The access way is located along one of the main streets of Pigna, the one connecting the road to the sea with the San Romolo valley, rich in citrus orchards, olive groves, farmed fields, flour mills and oil mills. Currently, the access way is located inside the dwelling, but originally, at the time of the 1321 wall, it marked the outer limit of the city.

Indeed, the neighbourhood around St. Joseph’s church was developed from the 15th century onwards. Near the gateway, at number 71 is located the 18th century Bottini family private chapel.
