Porta Montà

This is the gateway connecting the Rio San Romolo valley with via Palma and Pigna. In reality, the actual Monta gate no longer exists, but the steep, straight passageway may be clearly identified. Indeed, the term Montà. means “climb” and in effect, the access way is particularly steep. Located along the road leading from the Montà is the Sapia palace.

The building was the property of one of Sanremo’s most important families, and the interior is decorated with an eighteenth century scene in the style of Maurizio Carrega (1737 – post 1819). Napoleon Bonaparte was a guest here in 1794, during the French offensive led by General Massena.
